For teenagers, clothing is a way to fit in, but it can also become a tool for hiding a drug habit. If you suspect your teen is using substances, their wardrobe might hold the answers. There is usually a change in their wardrobe where they invest a great deal in bulky clothing, some with many pockets, linings that can be accessed and adapted to accommodate contraband of various kinds. Where they get the funds for these items is always a concern depending on their age and access to funds.

What You See

One major warning sign is when a teen suddenly guards their clothes from the family wash. They might stubbornly keep certain jackets, hoodies, or pants out of the laundry pile. This is often a calculated tactic to prevent you from finding hidden stashes or smelling lingering odors, like the distinct scent of marijuana. You do not need to know exactly what is happening in order to raise a concern. While checking your child’s clothes can feel like crossing a boundary, it is a necessary step when their safety is at stake. Pay attention during laundry days. Feel the lining of heavy jackets, check inside pockets, and notice if certain garments are suddenly off-limits. What looks like a normal outfit might actually be a disguise protecting a hidden addiction. Additionally, clothing can be physically modified to carry contraband. Teens may use or sew secret compartments, false pockets, or hidden seams to keep drugs, vapes, or pills on them without being noticed. They will frequently discard clothes that are familiar in favor of a new style that may look unusual for their build.
