32. DRAMATIC SLEEP CHANGES

What Research Shows

Sleep changes in teenagers are not always alarming on their own. Adolescence brings real biological shifts that naturally push teens toward later bedtimes and later mornings. That part is normal.

What research has found is that substance use accelerates and deepens those disruptions beyond what puberty alone explains. A study following more than 1,300 high school students found that teenagers who used cannabis were more than twice as likely to show severely disrupted sleep patterns. Alcohol and tobacco each produced distinct problems as well. Researchers at the National Institute on Drug Abuse have noted that the relationship runs in both directions: substance use disrupts sleep, and disrupted sleep drives further use.

What You See

You start to notice it in pieces. The teenager who used to be up by nine is now sleeping until noon, even when there is somewhere to be. Evenings shift too — awake at two in the morning, impossible to rouse by midday. There is an explanation when you ask, and it sounds plausible, but the pattern continues.

The tiredness seems to go deeper than a late bedtime. Low energy even after twelve hours of sleep, an irritability when rest is interrupted. Something about the quality feels off, not just the timing.

What You Can Do

Mark this item in the Checklist and Rating Scale #___. Keep a simple informal log — when they sleep, when they wake, how they seem. A few weeks of that is more useful than any single conversation, and gives you something concrete to bring this to them in a conversation you are prepared to have along with other signs of use. You do not need to know what is happening in order to raise a concern.

This sign is for awareness and education only. It is useful as a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool. It is not a substitute for professional assessment or treatment. If you are concerned about someone you love, speaking with a qualified addiction counselor or psychologist is always the right next step.
