80. HIDDEN CASH
What Research Shows
While saving money is usually a good thing, a sudden habit of hoarding large, unexplained sums of physical cash is a major warning sign. If your loved one suddenly stops spending their own earnings or allowance on everyday things—relying instead on you or their friends to pay for their food, gas, or daily needs—their relationship with money has taken a dark turn.
What You See
The red flag becomes undeniable if you discover a hidden stash of bills tucked away in a sock drawer, under a mattress, or in a backpack. In the drug world, cash is the undisputed currency. A person hoarding cash while refusing to touch their bank account is often trying to keep their transactions completely off the grid. They might be saving up to buy drugs in bulk, or worse, making untraceable profits from selling them.
What You Can Do
It is not uncommon for teenagers to be walking around with more cash in their pockets than their parents have in theirs. If this is the case, you can assume the excuses for do so are not truthful and you will want to watch this practice carefully. It would be acceptable for you to suspend allowance payments to them until they own the real reason for carry the cash. If you confront them, expect extreme defensiveness. They might offer vague excuses like "holding it for a friend" or "saving for a car," but they won't have any real proof. More often, they will explode in anger, accusing you of violating their privacy to deflect from the truth. Unexplained wealth is just as dangerous as unexplained debt. If your loved one is hiding piles of cash while acting broke in daily life, they have entered a high-risk world. Don't ignore the silence of that hidden money—it is a clear sign they are in deep.
