Seeds and Burns

What Research Shows

Marijuana use often slides from casual fun into an all-consuming habit. If your loved one is struggling, they will try hard to hide it, but the physical clues they leave behind will tell a different story. While they might laugh these off as clumsy accidents, these physical crumbs reveal a deep psychological dependency. Unlike some drugs, marijuana primarily hooks the mind. Your loved one may have reached a point where they need the drug just to sleep, manage anxiety, or find the motivation to get through the day.

What You See

Look out for raw marijuana seeds hidden away in dresser drawers, purses, or backpacks—a sign they may even be trying to grow their own supply. Another major warning sign is the sudden appearance of tiny, circular burn holes in their favorite t-shirts, bedsheets, or the couch. These are caused by hot embers falling from joints or pipes as they try to get high in secret. These quiet markers are proof that their "harmless" habit has turned into a psychological cage they cannot easily escape.

What You Can Do

Mark this on the Checklist and Rating Scale #___. Tell them you know what these mean. Teach them how to mend their clothes with needle and thread. Do not do it for them. Do not allow them to buy new clothing until old clothing is patched. If you are finding hidden seeds and mysterious burn holes, they aren't just "relaxing"—they are relying on a chemical to regulate their emotions. Only open a dialogue when you are prepared to discuss the entire use of alcohol and/or other drugs.
