35. GUARDED PHONES

What Research Shows

For teens, cell phones are a lifeline, but they are also the primary tool used to buy, sell, or coordinate drug use. While respecting a child's privacy is natural, extreme phone secrecy is a major warning sign that shouldn't be ignored.

What You See

If your teen suddenly guards their phone like a treasure, panics when you walk by, or becomes evasive about who they are texting, they may be hiding something serious. You might notice unrecognized numbers in their logs or messages that are instantly deleted. Often, they protect these contacts because they are dealers or peers enabling their habit.

As a parent, keeping tabs on their digital life isn't about being nosy; it's a vital safety measure. Investigating unfamiliar numbers or setting up parental controls can disrupt their access to substances and protect them from predators who pressure them to use or transport drugs.

What You Can Do

Taking away the phone entirely rarely solves the problem, as they can easily find other screens. Instead, active, transparent monitoring acts as a protective shield. Your teen might resent the intrusion, but breaking through their digital wall is a necessary step to steer them away from a dangerous path.
